What Worked in Your 20’s Won't Work Now (And That's a Good Thing)
If you're 40+ and still trying to out-cardio a bad diet, I need you to hear this: it's not going to work the way it used to. And it's not because you're doing something wrong- it's because your body isn't the same body it was at 20.
Here's what I mean.
In your 20s, you could get away with a lot.
Low-calorie diet. Skipped protein. Hours of cardio. And somehow, the jeans still fit. (Download my 7-Day Protein Guide HERE 👈)
That wasn't because the plan was smart. It was because your hormones and muscle mass were covering for you. Estrogen was protecting your bone density and metabolism. You likely had more muscle than you realized, and your body was resilient enough to bounce back from under-fueling without immediate consequences.
That doesn't mean it was healthy. It means the damage was invisible- for a while.
In midlife, the bill comes due.
Perimenopause and menopause change the rules. Declining estrogen affects how your body holds onto muscle, regulates blood sugar, and manages fat storage- especially around the midsection. Muscle mass naturally decreases with age if you're not actively working to preserve it. And when you're not eating enough protein or lifting with enough intensity, that decline speeds up.
So the "eat less, do more cardio" formula doesn't just stop working. It actively works against you. Under-eating in your 40s and 50s can tank your metabolism and accelerate muscle loss- the opposite of what you need for a strong, capable body long-term.
So what actually works?
Protein- a lot of it. Muscle needs protein to stay, especially in midlife when your body doesn't hold onto it as easily.
Strength training, not just cardio. Lifting heavy signals your body to keep and build muscle. Cardio alone doesn't do that.
Eating enough- not less. Chronic under-eating tells your body to hold onto fat and burn through muscle. That's the opposite of what you want.
Patience with the process. Your body is playing a different game now. Chasing 20-year-old strategies will only leave you frustrated.
The bottom line:
You're not broken. You're not doing it wrong. You just outgrew a strategy that was never actually working- it just hadn't caught up with you yet.
